What is OLED?

Organic Light Emitting Diode, or OLED, is a technology that uses carbon-based organic material in a process that converts electric energy into light. This light is used to illuminate the screen and produce the most astounding results ever seen on a television.
What makes OLED so special?
Incredible 3mm thinness.
OLED emits light and does not require a backlight-realizing a new TV form of approximately 3mm at its thinnest point.
Exquisite shades of black.
An unparalleled 1,000,000 : 1 contrast ratio. OLED's light-emitting structure prevents light emission when reproducing shades of black: OLED technology reproduces very deep blacks and can control all the phases of light emission, expressing colors and subtleties that conventional displays cannot match.
Fast-moving objects are smoother than ever.
Sports never looked better. Spontaneous control of the light emitted from the organic material layer reproduces smooth yet natural images of fast-moving action.
High peak brightness reproduces picture glow.
Sony's unique Super Top Emission technology achieves efficient light emission from the organic materials and high peak brightness. As a result, OLED technology faithfully reproduces light flow such as sunlight reflection and fireworks.
Vivid, natural color reproduction.
Sony's proprietary organic materials, the "Super Top Emission" micro-cavity structure and the embedded color filter's color extracting technology reproduces high-purity and vivid colors.
Low power consumption.
The OLED display consumes less electricity compared to conventional displays because OLED's light-emitting structure does not require a separate light source and can be powered using very low voltages.
